Art and Artist: She's got it all

Some art lovers like to know who the artist is before they buy the piece of artwork.  Others let the art speak for itself.  We are confident that whichever art lover you identify as, Lorraine Colpitts’ jewelry meets that preference.  Along with being a wonderful person, she has an eye for style that allows each piece to stand alone or complement another piece.

Aside from her keen ability to find the perfect balance of stone and silver, she is one of those people you can meet and instantly feel at home with.  Lorraine is the type of person who can make and nurture lifelong friends.  The first time I met her, we caught up for coffee, I was so engaged I forgot to order a hot drink!  We slid from one conversation topic to another effortlessly.

Lorraine shares her talents with others by teaching classes at The Atlantic Bead Company in Dartmouth on wirework and weaving.  It is important to her to provide the support and opportunities to gain skills that weren't around for her when she was starting her jewelry.  Along with teaching, Lorraine collaborates with another one of our artists, Rachael Jessup to create another line of jewelry, Essence Diffuser Jewelry.

Although Lorraine has always been a creative person, in her early years she sewed and it wasn’t until 2009 when she starting making jewelry.  Between sewing and 2009, Lorraine put her creative energy into her family and raising a house full of busy, rambunctious boys, which includes one with special needs.  Lorraine has been a great advocate for her son throughout the years, encouraging his independence beyond their life together.  Raising children has both highs and lows and some days it takes a lot of creativity to make it through.  Although raising her children could be exhausting (I can attest to this with my own two) all of these experiences have brought her to find more balance through her jewelry.  And born from this has come her business, Little Lovelies

When she refocused her creativity on jewelry, she spent endless hours practicing and teaching herself different techniques.   All of Lorraine’s little lovelies have great detail and her eye for detail and patience is evident.

Currently, Lorraine is working her collection of beautiful gemstones into wearable art and she will be the first to admit it is hard to let her favourite stones go.  Below is just one of the many stunning stones she has to work with.

Tree of Life by Lorraine Colpits

Tree of Life

I can't take my eyes off this piece!  At first sight, Tree of Life is stunning with its wrapped tree and is enough to fall in love with; but if you look beyond at the stone, the Northern Lights illuminate the piece.  This is a must-have, one-of-a-kind piece of elegance!

We welcome Lorraine Colpitts and her gorgeous jewelry to Whisper Wind Gallery and can’t wait to share more of her unique creations with you!  To see all of her collection on our site, click here.  To follow more of Lorraine's talents click on the links below:

I am proud to be able to call Lorraine a lifelong friend. Ummm, for 50 years, haha, sorry Lor was that too much information. Yes, she has ALWAYS been creative and I’ve loved to have seen her express her skill and creativity through jewelry. Her attention to detail is second to none, and ahe has the patience of a saint when teaching her craft. I have many of her pieces and while wearing them proudly I constantly get comments and inquiries as to where I got them. Whisperwind has a gem (pardon the pun) with Lorraine as a featured artist.

Lorraine is my aunt and she has helped me in so many ways when I attend her classes. I sadly did not get the sewing and jewelry making gene. But she has helped me endlessly in those classes to help me make a beautiful piece. (For 1st time people like myself!) I just love her work, and get lots of beautiful jewelry made by her for gifts and myself 😍
